Digital Locks, Smart Locks and Keypad Locks – What's the Difference?

G'day Perth! Digital Lock Man here!
One question I'm often asked is: "What's the difference between a digital lock, a smart lock and a keypad lock?"
It's a good question, because these terms are often used interchangeably. While they're closely related, they don't all mean exactly the same thing. So let me explain!
1. What is a Digital Lock?
A digital lock is the general name given to an electronic door lock that allows you to unlock your door without relying solely on a traditional key.
Depending on the model, you might be able to unlock your door using a PIN code, fingerprint, swipe card, key tag or even your smartphone.
Digital locks are becoming increasingly popular with Perth homeowners and businesses because they offer convenient keyless entry and make managing access to your property much easier.
2. What is a Keypad Lock?
A keypad lock is a type of digital lock that allows you to enter your property by punching in a personal identification number (PIN) on a number pad.
Instead of carrying keys around, you simply enter your code to unlock the door.
Many keypad door locks allow you to program multiple user codes, which is particularly handy for families, visitors and people who need to provide access to their property.
Some models also include a traditional key override, giving you another way to unlock the door if needed.
3. What is a Smart Lock?
A smart lock is a more advanced type of electronic door lock that can connect to your smartphone or home automation system.
Depending on the model and setup, you may be able to lock or unlock your door using an app, manage user access codes, check activity or even control your lock remotely.
Some smart locks also offer features such as automatic unlocking and notifications when someone uses the door.
It's worth remembering that not every smart lock has the same features. Some require an additional Wi-Fi bridge or hub to provide remote access.
So, What's the Difference?
Here's the easiest way to remember it:
Digital lock: The general term for an electronic door lock.
Keypad lock: A digital lock that uses a PIN code entered on a keypad.
Smart lock: A digital lock with connected features, often controlled through a smartphone app.
And here's something important: these categories can overlap! A smart lock can also have a keypad, meaning one lock can be both a smart lock and a keypad lock.
Which Digital Lock Is Right for You?
That really depends on what you're looking for.
If you simply want to stop carrying keys, a keypad lock might be all you need. If you'd like to manage access through your smartphone or have additional connected features, a smart lock could be a better option.
There are some excellent options available from Yale and Carbine, with different models offering different combinations of keypad entry, key tags, smartphone access and other features.
